Blessed Sacrament's Cona

After the liturgical celebration at 11:30 am at the Senatorial Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, the restored Cona of the Blessed Sacrament was unveiled, made by Antonino Gagini. The restoration, entrusted to Studio Kéramos Arte e Restauro and carried out by Andrea Vasile, has brought to light a work blackened by time but which confirms in its image the Dogma of the Eucharist, proclaimed in 1551 during the Council of Trent, in which the real and transubstantial presence of Christ during the consecration was sanctioned.

Commissioned from Antonino Gagini, in 1551 by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, the work follows a reading that goes from left to right and from bottom to top. In the predella scenes of the Passion taken from the Gospel according to Matthew while in the centre, angels in chorus give glory to the chalice and the host. Originally located in the presbytery, it was dismembered and relocated to the current chapel. The artefact included the two statues of Saint Peter and Paul placed at the entrance, the two statues of Saint Anthony the Abbot at the entrance to the rectory and God the Father placed in the chapel dedicated to the Holy Founder.
