Monumental Complex of the Carmine Maggiore

GUIDED VISIT to the first medieval church of the Carmelite fathers, 1118, donated by Adelasia, Queen of Jerusalem.

Day 14 December 2024 from 16:00 to 18:00 will take place a guided tour in two shifts, the entire Monumental Complex of the Carmine Maggiore including: the Chapel of Pietà, the Baroque church and the bell tower with a privileged view of the majestic majolica dome.

The small chapel of the Pietà, XI century, donated by the Countess Adelasia, Queen of Jerusalem to the Carmelite fathers remained unchanged for centuries, still preserves frescoes inside, and Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements, as well as a Sacred Spina crown of the head of Jesus. This chapel represents the milestone of the Carmelite settlement in Palermo, later flanked by a larger building in 1243 until the definitive expansion of the baroque church of 1627 project by Mariano Smiriglio.

The Cultural Association Sikalesh organizes an extraordinary guided tour inside the entire complex, in which will be opened, for the occasion, the Medieval Chapel, first Carmelite settlement in Palermo, to continue in a historical artistic description of the baroque complex, with inside the two beautiful altars of the transept with the wonderful twisted columns decorated by the brothers Giacomo and Giuseppe Serpotta. Among the illustrious artists also Antonello and Domenico Gagini, Pietro Novelli, and Tommaso de Vigilia. You will end with the climb on the eighteenth-century bell tower from where it will be possible to observe closely the most beautiful dome of Sicily. On the occasion you can admire the beautiful canvas of 1492 by Tommaso de Vigilia, depicting the Madonna del Carmelo, recently restored and placed in the chapel of the same name, and the history of the first Carmelites.
